Discovering Wave Dynamics from DAS Data

This project focuses on distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) data collected from fiber optic cables laid on the seafloor (see more details from the OOI here). Utilizing SINDy, we develop a series of increasingly descriptive PDEs governing the surface gravity wave pressure perturbations propagating along the cable. This work is novel in that realistic physics are determined directly from real world, noisy data with almost no transformations applied.

Discovering Plume Dynamics from Video Data

Similar in nature to the DAS project, this work involves applying SINDy to real data. Simple single camera footage is utilized in tracking and understanding the governing dynamics for vapor plumes. Various computer vision and data transformation schemes are being tested in order to best extract the necessary information regarding the plume trajectory and spread for this and similar research problems.
